It may only been a week since the last podcast went online, but we are back already!

In the first podcast of the New Year we visited the Comedy Pub in London, for no other reason than it was raining, and it looked nice and warm and dry.

Dave sorted a brilliant first guest dictionary opener for this month, none other than the magician Paul Daniels.

The interview was recorded just before the painful incident that recently got him in the news. Dave and Paul chat about how to do magic, the Olympics, the joys of being an entertainer and he even teaches Dave a new trick!

We then go on to talk about his chosen page, and the conversation covers topics such as the length of a novel, Super Nova and the concept of Nowhere.

How late can a podcast be? Well here is your answer, the Words Fail Me Christmas special is released in mid January. Merry Christmas!

It's worth waiting for though, Dave and Neil revisit the British Library cafe and discuss words on a page of the dictionary chosen by Katie Hopkins.

Katie Hopkins is known for being on the Apprentice and famously saying 'no' to Lord Sugar, and also took part in the ITV reality show I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. She chats to Dave about the meaning of celebrity, Christmas and Family.

Dave and Neil also give presents to each other, talk about typewriters and printing, and the most christmassy of all subjects... tyres.

Another month passes and it's that time again, a new episode of the Words Fail Me podcast! Dave and Neil return to Oxford this month to discuss Novembers page of the dictionary.

This months guest dictionary opener is none other than author and comedian Tony Hawks, the fridgeman himself! Dave chats to Tony about his books being adapted into films, tennis, and the mystery woman...

Neil and Dave then pick up Tony's chosen page and do a few bird impressions, talk about Liverpudlians, and get attacked by Italians on bikes.

Our guest this month was Richard Adams, author of Watership Down. Dave discusses all things rabbits, and Richard reveals what he thought of the film adaptation of his story.

This month our dictionary is opened by Middlesex and West Indies cricketer Corey Collymore (who the podcast is Twenty20 kit sponsor for), in the salubrious surroundings of Lords Cricket Ground!

Dave chats to him about cricket (obviously!), the best grounds, and the creative impulse.

He chooses a page that is mostly about cream and creation, this spins (see I can do cricket references) the conversation into subjects as diverse as when it's ok to eat a cream tea, conspiracy theories, name calling and atheist sandwiches.

We also cross the famous Abbey Road crossing with the Words Fail Me podcast dictionary, and talk a little about the Beatles.

Recorded in a pub garden by the River Exe in Devon we discuss a page of the Oxford English Dictionary chosen this month by Mike Peters, of The Alarm and Big Country. Dave chats with Mike about the Summer, his battle with cancer, and making the most of life.

Dave and Neil then discuss subjects as diverse as Flying ants, puns, various forms of violence and various summer sporting events. Neil gives Dave a present from the British Grand prix that cost him nothing at all... here is a picture as a clue as to what it may have been...

Almost up to date again! Our dictionary adventures this month take us into the letter K, with a page chosen by someone who is practically royalty, Lady Elizabeth Anson, a cousin of the queen and party planner extraordinaire. In fact Lady Elizabeth was the very first party planner, long before it was fashionable! She chats to Dave about surprise parties, the most important elements of a gathering and how she got into the business by falling down some stairs.

This particular page of the dictionary sparks discussions about beer, bingo, mango and the Middle East. Dave is convinced that Neil has just lost all the subscribers when he conversationally starts not liking certain things... download here to find out more!

Showaddywaddy, Lollies and Sweet as a Nut

Everyone loves a fun band, I remember seeing 'Chas and Dave' at a festival in Cheltenham and having a great time, or the Wurzels in Exeter went down a storm. If you like fun in your Rock and Roll then Showaddywaddy may be the band for you!

They are in the middle of a tour of the UK tour at the moment, and Dave has asked me if we can put the remaining dates on the blog, so if you live in Dundee, Wick, Exmouth, Yeovil, St Helens or Blackburn take a look here for more information. If you live elsewhere then still take a look, as there are many more gigs later in the year.

Although Dave is being his usual secretive self I suspect that this is not the last you will hear of Showaddywaddy on Words Fail Me...

To celebrate the Royal Wedding we decide to visit Westminster Abbey in London to record this months podcast.

Our guest dictionary opener this month is Zandra Rhodes, fashion designer to the famous and all round nice person!

Like two tramps with a microphone we sit steps near the Abbey and talk about ice cream, ice skating and many other cold things! There is some confusion about the version of dictionary we are using, and Dave reveals another bizarre sponsorship deal.

As expected the miracle did not materialise and we were not nominated for the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

But all was not lost, as Dave and myself had an excellent time at the nominations ceremony at One Marylebone last night. A fancy venue with fancy high ceilings and fancy small nibbles on trays.

We met some really nice people as well, a guy from Insight Radio who was really interested in our podcast, a big group from BFBS, a FunKids Radio producer, a website designer for the awards itself, and the guys and girls from the Tin Can podcast, who were having as much fun as we were!

Well done to all those who were nominated, the competition was very strong and I think little podcasts like ours were never really going to get a nomination, but it won't stop us trying again next year!

Sony Radio Awards 2011

As you may of heard on the last podcast Words Fail Me has been invited (along with all other entrants) to the Nomination event in London tomorrow night. I am pleased to say that both Dave and myself will be attending the event, and look forward to meeting other podcasters and radio peoples.

The event is coincidently being held in a function suite that used to be the headquarters of the bookshop I worked for, so have been in there maybe a dozen times before - it is certainly a small world!

We are back! Dave and Neil are visiting the Victoria & Albert museum in London this month, with special guest dictionary opener Dave Pegg.

The 'Daves' talk about Fairport Convention, making music with computers, needing the toilet at gigs and Bob Dylan.

Neil and Dave then discuss the words on the page of the dictionary that Dave Pegg randomly chose, and what an interesting page it turns out to be! Inappropriate topics for conversation include menstruation, the menopause and other embarrassing topics for two men to talk about in the refined surrounding of a museum courtyard!

Dave also has some news about our application for the Sony Awards, as well as an update on our New Year challenges (which Dave barely remembers setting!)

Words Fail Me updates & The Sky at Night

Almost a month has passed since our last podcast, and we have had a great response to our last few episodes, especially January's episode featuring Robin Ince, which has had an impressive number of downloads.

You may have seen that the BBC broadcast the 700th edition of Patrick Moore's The Sky at Night recently. A really great show (at time of writing it is available on the iplayer here). The show features various parts of Patrick's house, which is where Dave recorded his interview with him for Words Fail Me last March, you can still download and listen to the episode here. I think I will ask Dave a little more about what it was like being is Sir Patrick's house in the next episode!

Sony Radio Academy Awards 2011

It is official, the Words Fail Me podcast has entered the Sony Radio Academy Awards 2011 in the Best Internet Programme category.

We have entered the July 2010 episode as our sample podcast, as well as having a great high profile guest (Rick Wakeman from Yes) we feel this a very typical of our output. It was certainly a show we enjoyed recording and feel it will give us the best shot at being nominated... not that we need to sell it to you, it's all up to the panel of judges now!

To celebrate the new year join Neil and Dave as they crack open the bubbly on New Years Day and discuss another page of the dictionary.

The inaugural podcast of 2011 features special guest dictionary opener Robin Ince. Neil chats to Robin about books, the contents of his bag, science and Razorlight.

An interesting page to start the year prompts conversation about Gaelic football, Gags (of all types), an unusual definition of gangster, going into space, and Dave tries to invent his own theory while we both get a bit tipsy (at 10am in the morning!).

Ted Sorensen 1928-2010

Shortly After recording Novembers podcast in London yesterday Dave rang me with the sad news that Ted Sorensen, our podcast guest and dictionary opener for our April edition, had died.

Ted was best known for being speech writer for JFK, and coining some of the most iconic phrases in American politics. He kindly took time out earlier this year to chat to us about his career and thoughts on modern politics, and also choose a page of words for us to discuss on Words Fail Me.

Dave and Neil are back after a slight delay! Thanks for bearing with us, Neil's stuff has been hiding in boxes while he has moved, and the pieces of the podcast have only just been retrieved from a box labelled "Random stuff possible junk?".

Octobers podcast guest is non other than comedy actor Bill Pertwee, star of Dads Army and Round the Horne. He tells Dave about how he got into Radio, and also about his new book - Dads Army, The making of a television legend.

Dave and Neil also find time to play an autumnal game of conkers, talk about Dave's habit of stealing things from famous studios, sing some songs about money and reminisce about travels in the Middle East.

Another month has passed and it's finally time for July's instalment of the Words Fail Me podcast with Dave and Neil!

This month our page was chosen by none other than Yes legend and keyboard extraordinaire - Rick Wakeman!

One of the nicest guests we have had, and very adept at picking a round numbered page with some interesting words on.

We discuss the unluckiness of thirteen, we show how little history we know, Neil discovers several things he does not like, and insults Roald Dahls granddaughter and also most of Scotland. Dave regretfully sings at one point.

Words Fail Me Summer special

Dave and myself have been enjoying the sun since the last podcast was recorded, not only has it helped us forget the woeful performance of England (and the Ivory coast, another pound wasted!) in the World Cup, but we also took the opportunity to record a new celebrity dictionary opening for Julys podcast, which will be out in the next few weeks.

For August we are thinking about doing something different, and perhaps recording the podcast on the beach, or at least in a beach hut near the beach. One possible location is Dawlish, which is home to the excellent Dawlish Air Show (http://www.dawlishairshow.co.uk/) each August, this year taking place on the 19th.

If you are local to the area, or perhaps just on holiday in Devon over that period then do go and take a look, you may even bump into Dave and I!

World Cup Podcast update

As promised by Dave on the last podcast we placed a bet on Ivory Coast. We were hoping we could place a bet on them reaching the semi finals, but it seems this is not allowed (you can bet on almost anything else!) so a bet was placed on them reaching the final.

I don't want to suggest that Dave has wasted a pound of the podcast budget, but I believe they have to beat North Korea about ten-nil on Friday to get through to the next stage!

Anyway we won't let that dampen our spirits as England play tomorrow, and I don't see how we could possibly lose...

We seemed to have a slight problem with the podcast being uploaded yesterday, but we are in the process of fixing it! If you try now it should be working and you can hear Dave, Neil and Jo in all their audio glory!

The fifth episode of the Words Fail Me Podcast is recorded during an historic moment in the country's history while we were without a Prime Minister.

As Mr Brown was off to tender his resignation to the Queen, Neil and Dave were rambling about the sound of the sea, horrible sounding words, moonlighting on other podcasts, torturing mice and Neil's general ignorance of famous nurses.

We are back! As you can see from the pictures this month Dave is in New York!

Our guest has a New York flavour as speech writer Ted Sorensen talks about Kennedy, Obama, Egypt and chooses a page of our travel sized dictionary.

In a slightly extended New York special podcast it’s Neil’s turn to burst into song, we discuss the next logical place to theme a podcast now that we have “done” New York, find out how Dave has an exclamation mark addiction and we talk about the egg and the ego.

It seems a long time since the last episode, but fear not the next one will be recorded this week and will be in your ipods by the weekend!

An exciting episode this month as it is the New York special, with genuine New York guest, I have no idea who it is, but Dave says it is really interesting. He won't tell me any more than that!

Also confirmed is a future Football World Cup special podcast, which will be out in whatever month the World Cup is held... I really need to do some research on this strange ball game before we record that one.

Words Fail Me Google map updates

March's podcast has been up for a few weeks now, and we have had over 80 downloads already this month!

As promised we have updated the Google Map again, after a placeless month we now have 2 places in Africa to add, a bit of a shame we did not have much to say about them on the recording, hopefully some more interesting places will come up in April's page (it is going to be a New York special after all!)

Comedy star lined up to open dictionary...

The excellent comedian (or comedienne, as she refers to herself on her site) Jo Caulfield has agreed to open the dictionary for us for a future Words Fail Me podcast!

We hate to ruin the surprise but we did want to mention it while she is still on the road, as by the time our podcast is recorded Jo's Won't Shut Up UK tour will be almost over.

Jo Caulfield has been doing stand up for over 12 years now, and is best known (well, in our house anyway) for her BBC radio comedy series It's That Jo Caulfield Again. She has also appeared on TV's Mock The Week and Have I Got News For You, as well as many radio panel games and also on Radio 2.

In fact the list of her accomplishments is almost endless, and you can find plenty more about Jo on her website www.jocaulfield.com. We are honoured that she has agreed to open the dictionary for Words Fail Me!

Dictionary opening update

We have secured an exciting guest to open the dictionary for us on this months Words Fail Me podcast... BBC 5live's film critic, and BBC2 Culture Show presenter Mark Kermode!

Despite being a film critic Mark is no stranger to opening books, so hopefully he will pick a great page for us to discuss later this month, and in fact his very own book It's Only A Movie is out in paperback tomorrow.

We are finally there. the first Words Fail Me podcast has been recorded and thrown together and is now available for your downloading pleasure!

Each month we read a page of the dictionary (this time we are lost in the middle of "M") and see what ramblings come from our mouths.

In this first episode Dave reveals he has plans grander than Neil could ever imagine, leading to a surprise celebrity appearance, we extol the virtues of the squarial, the risks of photographing yourself on Abbey Road, we show our mathematical ignorance and both make ill advised attempts at singing.

Greetings! Welcome to the home of a brand new podcast, Words Fail Me.

Each month Dave and Neil will be reading a dictionary, a random page each podcast. It may not sould like podcasting gold, but we aim to use each word to spin an entertaining conversation about a cavalcade of topics, some funny, some serious, and some surreal.
